July 17, 2023, became a memorable day for some, not because of a birthday or other occasion, but because it was the first day at a new school, marking the start of a new educational journey. What feelings might be present in each new student on their first day of school? Perhaps some felt excited, while others might have felt nervous and awkward.
To welcome the arrival of the new 7th-grade students, the OSIS (student council) of SMP Juara Bandung, together with the teachers, prepared a unique reception in the form of student performances. Two performances were arranged by OSIS: a rampak kendang (traditional drum ensemble) and a pencak silat (Indonesian martial arts) demonstration.
The event, which started at 7:00 AM on the school field, began with the new students being greeted by their 8th and 9th-grade seniors with the “5 S” (Senyum, Sapa, Salam, Sopan, Santun – Smile, Greet, Salute, Polite, Courteous). Accompanied by teachers and the school principal, the seniors also presented small tokens containing welcome notes and snacks.
The event continued with the rampak kendang and pencak silat performances. The seniors performed with enthusiasm and skill, showcasing their talents. The pencak silat demonstration even included matches using weapons such as machetes and sticks, showing the results of their long training under the guidance of professional extracurricular instructors.
Afterward, the school principal officially opened the MPLS (School Orientation Period) for the new 7th-grade students and a reorientation for the 8th and 9th graders. The opening was symbolized by the striking of a gong, marking the start of the activities.
Hopefully, this first day of school showed all the new 7th-grade students that they are warmly and joyfully welcomed as champion students.
